Founder, CEO and President
Rick Avers founded Veristar in 2019 and serves as the company CEO and president. With more than 30 years of experience managing large-scale litigation matters for clients in a variety of industries and working closely with trial lawyers and general counsel on matters both nationally and internationally, Avers is regarded for both his professional and personal integrity. Before founding Veristar Avers most recently was president of Certa-Tech Solutions, prior to which he served in leadership roles at Clearwater Legal, TrustPoint International, Onsite3, Merrill Corporation, IKON and Pitney Bowes Management Services.
Chief Operations Officer
Sandra Chu is an attorney with more than 10 years of experience with e-discovery and document review. She leads all operations at Veristar’s Washington, D.C., e-discovery and 200-seat document review facility. Before joining Veristar, she served as COO of CertaTech Solutions, prior to which she was a senior project manager at a top-tier Am Law 100 firm. Before her law firm tenure, she managed complex document review projects for a leading e-discovery services provider, where she oversaw a multitude of projects, managing hundreds of contract attorneys and assisting various law firms throughout the EDRM process.
Executive Vice President
Joseph Kearney has been supporting complex document managed review and legal staffing projects for more than 25 years. Prior to joining Veristar, he was a senior manager for several of the industry’s leading e-discovery providers with an intense focus on customer service and satisfaction. Kearney was previously a senior manager at Arnold & Porter LLP, where he oversaw the administration of the firm’s contract attorneys, as well as the paralegal and law clerk programs, before which he was a litigation paralegal at Am Law 100 firms, supporting numerous large-scale document collections and reviews.
Senior Managing Director
Richard Lucas is Veristar’s senior managing director of consulting services. With more than 22 years of experience in consulting and professional services, Lucas provides innovative solutions designed to help general counsel and law departments make optimal use of their data, ensure compliance, increase productivity and exercise control over legal spend. Prior to Veristar, Lucas worked for CertaTech, before which he spent 11 years as a senior legal project manager at Am Law 100 firm McDermott Will & Emery. He was previously a managing consultant/principal at IBM, where he specialized in solving complex business problems and improving business processes and operations.
Senior Managing Director
Mark Plaehn is a Senior Managing Director for Veristar. Mark has worked with corporate law and finance teams, law firm litigation, corporate, and securities attorneys and paralegals, and other corporate advisors for the last 25 years in the litigation, M&A, and corporate financing fields. His experience advising and assisting corporations, law firms, and their advisors, having partnered with his clients on more than 500 matters and transactions over his career, allows him to structure customized solutions tailored to the unique requirements of his clients’ needs and develop strategies to provide successful outcomes in high-stress, time-critical environments.
Kristen Johnson-Machiedo is a managing director at Veristar with more than 20 years of litigation experience, for both in-house law firm environments and e-discovery/review staffing consulting. Over her career, Johnson-Machiedo’s experience has included assisting with some of the largest U.S. and international matters, including big pharma IP/patent litigations, class actions, SEC investigations, Fortune 100 corporate litigations, second requests and multi-country FCPA investigations. With the advantage of having both in-house law firm experience and having worked as a consultant, she is uniquely positioned to assess client needs and identify the best approach to each project.
Aaron Massey is a managing director at Veristar with more than 25 years of experience as an electronic discovery and document management consultant. He has assisted legal, corporate and governmental clients in e-discovery litigations, corporate due diligence for M&A activities and calculating sales and revenue totals for financial damages assessments. His experience includes advising on strategy and developing document and data solutions throughout the EDRM cycle, as well as developing tailored processes and workflows utilizing analytics-based tools to optimize a wide variety of document reviews.
Vice President of Operations
Todd Tabor joined Veristar in 2019 from Nexem Legal, where he most recently served as group president. He previously was a partner/shareholder and vice president of operations at Franklin Data, prior to which he held leadership roles with TrustPoint International, HSNO, IKON and Xact Data Discovery. Tabor is a litigation discovery specialist with more than 25 years of experience managing large-scale, multi-location document collections and productions, having concentrated on litigation consulting with an emphasis on forensics and electronic discovery.
Vice President of Technology
Ryan Schnieber joined Veristar from Nexem Legal in 2019 with more than 20 years of experience, having previously served as director of computer forensics and litigation support at Franklin Data. Schnieber’s expertise includes litigation consulting and support, project management, supervision and administration, and risk management, with additional background in programming and database management for large corporations. He founded a global litigation support group to aid U.S.-based organizations with international offices seeking foreign language support, and he assists a globally-focused think tank in solving complex litigation issues for multinational companies.
Henry Dicker joined Veristar in 2019 from Nexem Legal, where he served as a group president. He previously served as chief revenue officer at Franklin Data, before which he held executive leadership roles for more than 16 years at ALM Media. Dicker’s more than 20 years of experience working closely with an array of organizations in the legal industry position him to identify client needs and strategize how Veristar can customize solutions to address even the most complex data challenges.
